Mangalsutra combines Sanskrit maṅgala ('auspicious, propitious') and sūtra ('thread/cord'). It is tied by the groom around the bride's neck during the wedding ritual known as Mangalya Dharanam ('wearing the auspicious'), after which it is worn by the woman for the remainder of the marriage as a visual marker of marital status.
