Arunachaleswarar Temple
Lord Shiva as Arunachaleswarar (Annamalaiyar) · Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu — Arunachala Hill — the Girivalam path
One of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, Thiruvannamalai represents the element of fire (Agni), with Arunachala hill itself worshipped as a form of Shiva. Every year the Karthigai Deepam festival lights a great lamp atop the hill, and devotees walk Girivalam — the 14 km barefoot circumambulation of Arunachala — traditionally undertaken on Pournami (full moon) nights as an act of surrender and devotion. It is one of Tamil Nadu’s most visited Shiva temples and the seat of the Ramana Maharshi ashram tradition of self-enquiry.
