'Raksha Bandhan' comes from Sanskrit rakṣā ('protection') and bandhan ('bond' or 'tie'); the Hindi word rākhī derives from Sanskrit rakṣikā. The festival's central ritual is a sister tying a rakhi thread around her brother's wrist; in return the brother gives a gift and pledges to protect her. Tied by a sister (traditionally) or any close sibling/chosen-family member onto the wrist of a brother or sibling on Raksha Bandhan day; not an everyday-wear item.
